Mason Howell experienced something most high school athletes can only dream about.

The Brookwood senior competed at the Masters after earning his place through a U.S. Amateur victory. Playing on one of golf’s biggest stages while still in high school is a rare achievement and instantly puts Howell among the most notable young golfers in the country.
Howell opened with a 77 while playing alongside Rory McIlroy. For any teenager, that kind of environment would be intense. The Masters brings massive crowds, global attention and one of the most demanding courses in the sport.
Even beyond the score, the experience is incredibly valuable. Competing against the best golfers in the world can accelerate a young player’s development. Howell had the chance to see elite preparation, course management and mental discipline up close.
High school golf does not always receive the same attention as football or basketball, but Howell’s story shows how special the sport’s top young athletes can be. Golf allows elite teenagers to test themselves on national and international stages earlier than many other sports.
For Brookwood and Georgia high school athletics, Howell’s appearance at the Masters is a major point of pride. He represented high school athletes on one of the biggest stages in sports.
